Are you not entertained!?

“Are you not entertained! Are you not entertained! Is this not why you are here!” -Gladiator

iPods, chick flicks, Geico commercials, fast cars, expensive sports, soap operas, or tire swings. Why do we have this undying need for something to laugh at, watch, or do?

Have we created a culture for ourselves in which we will sacrifice great things for moments of entertainment or pleasure? Have we sacrificed tough times and challenges before us for laziness and non-movement?

What I am NOT saying: Entertainment is bad. Don’t be entertained. Don’t have fun. Don’t laugh or cry or show any other emotions.

What I AM saying: Life must not be about you. It cannot be. Your world will implode if it is.

Perhaps we are looking for something to challenge us. Something that would make us move. Something that was ignite a passion. Perhaps we want all these things, yet we grow bored. We stop where we are comfortable. Entertainment. Perhaps we are simply looking to escape.

What if we stopped filling our time with an over-indulgence of entertainment simply to pass the time and filled it back up with fuel to live big?

How would your life change if you embraced a challenge? A new depth? Took on a new mountain? Made yourself less comfortable and more impacting?

I wonder if our ‘need’ to be entertained is fueled by our attempts to drown out the thoughts, questions and fears we have. Those things that we prefer not to deal with. The stuff that makes us uncomfortable when we are alone.

If we dare to step out of that mind numbing realm of seeking noise and hiding from that which confronts us, we do land in an uncomfortable & vunerable place.

In that uncomfortable place we can choose to slip back into the safety of being entertained or step out with the Savior and live a life that is full of challenges, a life that is not for the faint at heart but a life that requires total dependence on Jesus.

Great point, Laura… Safety really isn’t that safe at all, is it?
