Using Twitter to build communities…

Howdy! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe by email or RSS feed. Thanks for hanging out! Leave a comment...

I don’t think Twitter has reached its full potential as of yet. Here are a few creative ways that Twitter could be helpful in building communities… maybe you’re already doing these….maybe you’re not… Apply them to your own world….

•What if yours and each local starbucks was a twitterer? How would that build a community to make the local coffee shop less corporate? I’m sure Starbucks could use another Purple Cow.

•What if Twitter helped you know what the gas prices of your favorite gas station were as they changed?

•What if there is a sale at the grocery store… you only get a deal if you tell the code you got from the tweet?

•What if you could follow your builder as he sends picture updates about your house?

•What if your church actually used it? As a prayerboard or an in-service tool, etc.

•What if the college president used it to be relatable…for developing relationships?

•What if your professors used it to start conversations outside of class?

•What if your boss used it to encourage and motivate his entire team?

•What if the Weather Channel sent daily updates and advisories for your zip code?

Let’s be wise with the technology we have. Have you got any other creative ideas? How might people use Twitter to build a community?

Hi Evan! I know that Twitter keeps getting good press – so I might sound like someone on the bandwagon – but I really believe Twitter has the potential to build community in its own little micro-blogging way. Your post made me think of how libraries are using Twitter to create community. I’ve done a little bit of research on how libraries are using Twitter and I’ve seen how it has created opportunities socially and professionally for libraries. On a personal level, I know it has created wonderful opportunities for me to connect with and learn from other professionals in my fields of interest (libraries and student affairs in higher education).

Some great ideas for twitter uses, but I worry about dealing with information overload!

Eddie, thanks for commenting! this is a concern, but I would say that the actual benefits outweigh the negatives… It seems to be a self-control issue. We must take control of how much info we actually allow in. Thanks again.

    Lindyjb,
Thanks for commenting! There are so many cool ways that we have yet to use Twitter and other social media. It’s going to be incredible to watch the next 6 months to see what happens!!
