We get so comfortable being who we are and doing what we are already so good at that we forget to intentionally learn. For myself, I am intentionally setting up the next three or four weeks as a rather intense period of self-education. I’ve picked a field in which I believe I will excel and I am forcing myself to develop the skills in that area.

Here are some thoughts:
•Learn something that is simply an extension of something at which you’re already good.
•Learn something that is transferrable from one location to another.
•Learn something that will still be important in ten years…. no matter where technology takes us. (Hint: Technology will never have your leadership, passion, and heart…)
•Learn something that will help make you the best at what you do.
•Learn something that is helpful to a wide swath of people.
•Learn something that makes your success imminent.

I love thinking of ways to help people do what they do better. I love taking an idea and amplifying it through media, strategies, and forward thinking. This is my way of helping. The other day I offered some ideas and strategies to a friend because I genuinely care about the success of what they are doing.

Helping develops trust. Helping develops a tribe. Helping is contagious. Helping often lets the person being helped know that they aren’t alone.

On the flip side, nothing is more debilitating than being an island and not helping anyone other than yourself. Ouch….

Start with a bang:
Every morning. The first hour sets the tone. Value it. Use it well. Turn off your phone and email.
Every Monday. Set the pace, attitude, and level of intensity of for your entire week. Treat them with importance.

I mean come on…. isn’t this what you are fearful of? Dying an awkwardly unforeseeable death after taking a huge risk. This is what holds us back from risk. I’m not saying to jump off a cliff with skis and a parachute. I’m just saying… it’s what most of us are afraid of…. (perhaps this is a metaphor….)

He took the risk. No matter the outcome.

This is specifically for people who are so entrenched in their struggles and battles that they aren’t able to see it from an outside perspective: Relax.

Recliners do, for us, what we cannot force ourselves to do…. sit back…. relax. Many of us are up in arms about the economy, our financial security, our politics, etc. Don’t give up. Don’t quit working hard. Don’t quit being social. Just chill out and get some perspective. We all need to understand that our lives and purposes are not resting upon current world circumstances.

When we force situations and circumstances to our favor, we often do so at a cost. Sometimes the cost isn’t worth the payoff. (JP) So don’t panic. God didn’t intend for us to be constantly frantic.

Sit back. Relax. Do the things that come most naturally to you. Ask around. Learn something new. Trust that God is doing something bigger than you can imagine.

Get some perspective.

Think of the opportunities that he has now. Instead of doing something only for himself, perhaps he can use his intellect for good to change the face of whatever prison community he is forced to join. Maybe he could even write a book about his wrongs to help repay his victims and their families. Perhaps he could become a financial counselor to those who are close to rejoining mainstream society. What if he decided to inspire other prisoners through taking responsibility for his actions? What if he sparked a new era of responsibility and accountability in his prison that drastically improved the rehabilitation rate of those who are released?

What if?

An opportunity is only a problem without its costume.
